"A Year Down Yonder" by Richard Peck

It is 1937, and the Depression has hit the Dowdel family
hard. Mary Alice, a 15 year old girl, is sent to live with her eccentric
grandmother down in Illinois. She is taken on night adventures to
catch foxes, witnesses a large snake from her attic, and is humilated on
several accounts by her trigger-happy grandma. A Year Down Yonder is
original and humorous; I recommend it to everyone.
